R Vineyards is a husband-and-wife-owned vineyard built around a simple belief: farming comes first.
We spend our days working the land together, caring for the vineyard, learning from each season, and sharing the experience with our community. Our dogs are constant companions, the vineyard is our workplace and our home, and the wine is a reflection of the land and the people who care for it.
Whether you're here to enjoy a glass of wine, learn more about viticulture, or simply spend time in a beautiful rural setting, we welcome you to be part of the experience.
R Story
The story of R Vineyards begins not in a tasting room, but in the vineyard.
The Rosenthal family has been farming grapes on the northern slopes of Mt. St. Helena in southern Lake County since the early 1970s. For more than five decades, the family has cared for this land with a long-term commitment to sustainable farming, believing that healthy vineyards begin with respect for the soil, the environment, and the seasons that shape each harvest.
Today, that tradition continues through Dave Rosenthal, who brings a unique perspective as both grape farmer and winemaker. Working closely with the vineyard throughout the year provides an intimate understanding of the fruit, from the first signs of spring growth to harvest and beyond. This connection between farming and winemaking allows every decision to begin where great wine truly starts—in the vineyard.
The wines of R Vineyards reflect the character of the land from which they come. Grown in the distinctive terroir of southern Lake County, they are known for their bright fruit expression, balance, and sense of place.
More importantly, they represent generations of hard work, stewardship, and a deep appreciation for the agricultural lifestyle. While much has changed since the family first planted grapes here, the values remain the same: care for the land, commitment to quality, and a desire to share the rewards of farming with others.
For us, every bottle tells a story that began in the vineyard long before it ever reached the glass.

R Vines

Life at the vineyard follows the seasons.
Winter brings pruning and preparation. Spring awakens the vines and fills the property with new growth. Summer is spent tending to the vineyard, monitoring fruit development, and enjoying long evenings outdoors. Harvest season arrives with anticipation, hard work, and excitement as another year's efforts come to fruition.
No two days are exactly alike, and that's part of what we love most. Some days are spent among the vines. Others are spent sharing wine with friends, walking the property with our dogs, or planning for future seasons.
This is not simply where we work. It's where we live, learn, and continue building the life we've chosen together.

At R Vineyards, recognition has never been the goal—growing exceptional fruit and producing wines that honestly reflect the land has always come first.
Over the years, our wines have earned numerous awards and accolades from respected wine competitions, a testament to the quality of the fruit grown on our vineyard and the care taken throughout the winemaking process. While we are honored by these achievements, we remain focused on the same principles that have guided us for generations: thoughtful farming, attention to detail, and a commitment to showcasing the unique character of our southern Lake County terroir.
Our wines are known for their vibrant fruit expression, balance, and approachability. Each vintage reflects the growing season, the vineyard, and the agricultural heritage that continues to shape everything we do.
We invite you to experience the wines for yourself and discover why they continue to earn recognition from judges, collectors, and wine enthusiasts alike.
How our Reba & Rox Wines were named
Two of the first red wines produced by R Vineyards Rosenthal Family Wines were a Rhône-style blend and a Bordeaux-style blend, crafted from grapes grown in vineyard blocks named after Monica and Dave’s two children, Rebecca and Russell.
Rebecca and Russell grew up in the vineyards—eating grapes straight from the vines, playing among the rows, running alongside the dogs, and even helping move rocks out of the vineyard blocks. The vineyard wasn't simply where their family worked; it was their backyard and an important part of their childhood.
The twins were also musically talented, although their musical tastes reflected their very different personalities. Rebecca was drawn to the classical sounds of Mozart and took up the violin. Her twin brother, Russell, was a bit more rambunctious and preferred to “rock out” on the trumpet.
Rebecca and Russell were at the height of their elementary school musical careers when Monica and Dave decided to bottle, label, and release R Vineyards' award-winning Lake County wines.

When it came time to name their first two red wines, the inspiration was already woven into the vineyard and their family's story. Reba and Rox were named for the vineyard blocks—and, ultimately, for the two children who grew up among those vines. The names became a fitting tribute to Rebecca and Russell, capturing a little of their personalities, their childhood, and the Rosenthal family's life in the vineyard in every bottle.

Meet R Dogs
Life at R Vineyards wouldn't be complete without our rescue dogs Cali, Mocha, and Kona. Cali, our Border Collie, and Mocha and Kona, our Aussie mixes, are constant companions in vineyard life. You'll often find them walking the property, accompanying us through the vines, or greeting friends with enthusiasm and a wagging tail. They are an important part of our family, our daily routines, and the welcoming spirit of R Vineyards.
We encourage the adoption of dogs from any number of shelters. There is a crisis. Both dogs and cats need our help now more than ever. Visit a shelter today and find a new friend or donate time or items to: Lakeport Animal Shelter, Clearlake Animal Association, Compassion without Borders, Humane Society for Inland Mendocino County, or a shelter of your choosing. The Lake County spray and neuter program provided by SPCA is another great program in need of assistance and doing great work right here in our community. R Vineyards proudly supports providing the pets in our community with forever homes, love & care while working on human solutions to reduce overpopulation and abandonment of dogs and cats.
